Genetic testing looks for differences (also called variants) in the DNA that you are born with.
Genetic testing can help understand what is causing certain health concerns. In some cases, a genetic result may change the recommendations for your medical care.
There are many reasons that your healthcare provider may offer genetic testing, as it has many uses in medicine. Some examples include genetic testing for developmental concerns, or for certain types of cancer or heart problems that may have a hereditary cause. If a genetic cause is found, then genetic testing can be offered to other people in the family.
Genetic counselling can help you understand the medical and emotional aspects of genetic testing. Talk to your healthcare team if you have questions about whether genetic testing may be helpful to you or your family.
