Having a Hip Replacement

Equipment you’ll need

It’s important to use equipment that protects your hip and lowers your risk of falling after surgery. You’ll use this equipment in the hospital and for up to 3 months at home.

Have the following equipment ready 1 to 2 weeks before surgery so you can practice with it.

  • a walker, cane, crutches
  • a reacher
  • a chair with armrests
  • a hip cushion
  • a sock aid, leg lifter, elastic shoe laces, and a long-handled shoehorn
  • a non-slip bath mat
  • a raised toilet seat
  • toilet arm rests
  • a long-handled sponge or brush
  • a shower seat (chair) for a walk-in shower
  • a tub seat and clamp-on tub bar for metal tubs
  • a transfer bench for a fiberglass tub (your healthcare team will let you know which type to get)
  • exercise equipment, like an elastic loop
  • any other equipment your healthcare team suggests

There are many places to buy or borrow equipment, such as:

  • a pharmacy or medical equipment vendor
  • a medical equipment loan program (if there’s one where you live)
  • your community health unit or home care program
  • friends or family (as long as the equipment is in good condition, safe, and the right type for your height and weight)
