Care at home after surgery

Before you leave the hospital, your child’s healthcare team will let you know how to care for them at home. Ask questions about your child’s care at home after surgery during their hospital stay.

For general information on how to take care of your child after you leave the hospital, go to MyHealth.Alberta.ca and search the Patient Care Handouts for your child’s surgery or procedure.

If you’re worried about your child

If you’re worried about your child, call your child’s surgeon's office or clinic. If the office or clinic is closed, listen for a phone message that may tell you what to do or who to call.

You can also call Health Link at 811 to speak to a registered nurse 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, about any concern.

Prescriptions

If you need a prescription filled before you go home, check with the hospital to see if there’s a pharmacy on site. If not, make plans to get the prescription filled at a community pharmacy.
