Your Child’s Surgery

Packing lists

Stays in hospital of 1 night or less

Remember to bring your child’s provincial healthcare card and their birth certificate or passport. Also bring the following items:

  • a comfort item to take into the operating room such as a toy, blanket, or stuffed animal
  • a housecoat or zip-up hoodie and warm socks or slippers
  • an extra set of loose comfortable clothes for your child to wear home
  • medical supplies your child uses at home such as crutches, breathing (respiratory) equipment, emergency tracheostomy basket, g-tube equipment, continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP)/bilevel positive airway pressure (BiPAP) machine. Bring enough supplies for 24 hours.
  • all medicines that your child takes including inhalers, insulin, heart, or seizure medicines
  • special foods your child needs
  • activities to keep your child busy such as books, tablet, crafts, toys, games, portable music players, or hand-held video games
  • a cell phone and charger
  • a sealable plastic container or bag for the drive home

For babies:

  • diapers and ch​anging supplies
  • soothers, bottles, and nipples
  • any special bottle, nipple, or sippy cup your child likes to use for after surgery
  • formula
  • breastfeeding supplies

Stays in hospital of more than 1 night

Pack the items listed above plus the following:

  • toiletries including toothbrush and toothpaste, shampoo and conditioner, hair brush, and hair accessories
  • eye glasses or contacts and contact solution
  • money for vending machine, hospital gift shop, or cafeteria
  • headphones
  • your child’s school work ​
