Your Child’s Surgery

The night before your child’s surgery

Have your child take a bath or shower and shampoo their hair. Braid long hair or tie it back in a ponytail. Use special soap if you were asked to use it.

Your child will also need to remove:

  • nail polish from fingers of both hands
  • make-up
  • jewelry - including all piercings from the ears, face, and body

Eating and drinking before surgery

For your child’s safety, you’ll get instructions on eating and drinking before surgery. If your child doesn’t follow these instructions, your child’s surgery will be cancelled. If your child is on a special diet that will cause issues with not eating or drinking for a time, let the hospital staff know. To learn more about eating and drinking before surgery, read the Parent's surgery frequently asked questions (FAQs).

What are clear fluids?

Clear fluids are liquids that you can see through, such as:

  • water
  • apple juice without pulp (not freshly squeezed)

Babies can have sterile water, bottled sugar water, or electrolyte solutions such as Pedialyte. Don’t give your child any kind of milk.
