Addiction Services - Protection of Children Abusing Drugs Program

AHS Addiction and Mental Health Services - Protection of Children Abusing Drugs Program (PChAD) is for legal guardians of youth under the age of 18 who can apply to the Provincial Court of Alberta, Family Court for a protection order. Guardians must provide evidence to the judge to show that the youth’s use of alcohol or other drugs is likely to cause significant harm to the youth or others. PChAD is a treatment option for youth who will not access addiction on a voluntarily basis. If the court agrees, the youth will be admitted to a Protective Safe House (PSH) for up to ten days. While in the Protective Safe House, the youth will undergo detoxification and stabilization as well as participate in an assessment with an addiction counsellor. Parents / guardians are expected to participate in programming at the PSH.

Parents / guardians who want to apply for a protection order must first attend a PChAD Pre-Application Information Session with an AHS addiction counsellor. Make an appointment at an Addiction and Mental Health services office in / near your community to explore all alternatives, including voluntary programs, and to receive more information about PChAD. The addiction counsellor will provide written proof of attendance once you have completed a Pre-Application Information Session, which the court will require prior to accepting an application for a protection order.

If a judge grants a protection order, parents / guardians will be able to request a bed for their child. A bed will be placed on hold for a child as soon as possible after a request is made; however, beds are not always immediately available. PChAD is not a crisis service. Admissions to PChAD are carefully planned and coordinated. Parents/guardians will receive instructions from the addiction counsellor at the Pre-Application Information Session about how to request a PChAD bed after a protection order is granted.

PSHs are located in Calgary, Edmonton, Red Deer, and Grande Prairie. Transportation to the house is the responsibility of the parent / guardian, however parent / guardians can request in their application to court for assistance from police to apprehend and convey their youth to a PSH. It is the parent / guardian’s responsibility to pick up the youth from the house at the end of their stay.

Alberta Colorectal Cancer Screening Program

The ACRCSP advocates for adherence to the Canadian colorectal cancer screening guidelines; these guidelines recommend that average-risk men and women aged 50 to 74 years of age participate in colorectal cancer screening using the FIT (Fecal Immunochemical Test) every 1-2 years. The FIT is a home stool test (poop test) that finds blood in the stool. Patients who are at increased risk of developing colorectal cancer (due to a personal or family history of colorectal cancer or pre-cancerous polyps) should be screened at regular intervals via a colonoscopy.  Please speak to your doctor about what test is most appropriate for you.

ACRCSP develops and supports the implementation activities that help contribute to the prevention and early detection of colorectal cancer.

Services include:

  • providing increased access to colorectal cancer screening services across the province
  • providing information and education to target age groups and healthcare providers
  • mailing FIT home stool test result letters (abnormal and normal) to men and women between 50 and 74 years of age
  • providing colorectal cancer screening quality assurance
  • improving and supporting the overall quality of colonoscopies
  • patient and provider education

Alberta's Newborn Metabolic Screening Program

Healthcare providers work with parents (or guardians) to screen for 17 treatable conditions (14 metabolic, 2 endocrine, and cystic fibrosis).

  • Newborn blood spot screening helps your doctor or midwife find conditions that can be treated early to prevent health problems, improve your baby's health and may even save your baby's life. It’s the best way to tell if your baby has a treatable condition that you, your doctor or your midwife might not know about.
  • It’s best to have the newborn blood spot screen completed at the hospital when your baby is between 24 and 72 hours old, before your baby goes home. If it is not completed at the hospital, it will be completed at a home visit, clinic visit or at a lab in your community.
  • Your doctor or midwife will have results by the time your baby is two weeks old.

Emergency Medical Services Palliative and End of Life Care Assess Treat and Refer Program

This service links primary and palliative care resources in the community to collaboratively manage patients in a symptom crisis.

The program may be initiated by EMS, who arrive in the home after a 911 call from the patient or family, or by a clinician, who has assessed the patient (in the home or over the phone) and determines additional support is needed on an urgent basis.

The program brings an interdisciplinary team directly to the patient. EMS and the clinician work together, with the patient and the patient’s family, to provide care that aligns with the patient’s wishes and Goals of Care. They also have access to an on-call physician to determine the best treatment.

If possible, the patient will be supported to remain in their home. However, EMS will provide transport to the emergency department, if desired.

For further information see our website.

Indigenous Health Program

The Indigenous Health Program (IHP) delivers health services for First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples in Alberta. The IHP works with Indigenous peoples, communities and other partners to provide services to Indigenous patients that honour their culture, beliefs and identities.

Our work is guided by five important areas:

  • Caring for our patients with respect and dignity
  • Improving access to health services
  • Treating people as unique individuals
  • Managing addictions and mental health
  • Staying up to date on the health of Indigenous Albertans

We do this by connecting with Indigenous communities, leaders, decision-makers, and most importantly, our patients. In addition, we are guided by the advice of our Wisdom Council, a group of First Nations, Métis and Inuit Albertans who first came together in September 2012. Their goal is to help ensure that all Indigenous Albertans receive the best possible health care.
