Alberta Health Services Provincial Simulation Program

Simulation is a training technique which enables learners to practice and master individual and team skills to improve patient safety and enhance the quality of care.

With simulation a range of scenarios can be practiced from road traumas, to situations in hospital or home care settings. It supports all types of learning from developing or enhancing technical skills to working as a member of a team to improving communication skills. Simulation also offers the opportunity to assess individuals within a safe environment without risk to the patient.

The eSIM program supports training for physicians and staff involved in the delivery of care to patients in Alberta using 2 primary services:

  • Simulation Practice Readiness Centres (PRCs)
These training facilities are designed and equipped to recreate virtually any care environment and are located at multiple sites in Alberta
  • Mobile Simulation
Specialized vehicles and a variety of portable equipment is used to support educators who do not have access to a PRC.

For more information about eSIM visit our website.

Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS)

The Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) service works to improve patient care related to nutrition, mobility after surgery, fluid management, anesthesia and pain control. We engage patients and make them part of the team by involving them in preparation for their surgery and post-operative recovery. By helping patients stay strong, we can improve outcomes, reduce complications and create a better patient experience.

Before surgery:

  • patients are taught health activities to practice that will help them recover
  • medications for pain, nausea, infection, and blood clot prevention are given based on best practice evidence

During surgery:

  • management of pain, nausea and fluids is provided
  • techniques are applied to reduce surgical stress response (minimally invasive surgery, employ blocks or freezing to prevent pain signals from setting off fight or flight /stress response)

 After surgery:

  • evidence promotes less lines, drains, tubes and early urinary catheter removal

Sometimes a person who isn’t a blood relative can be a donor (e.g., husband, partner, wife, in-laws, close friend). Anonymous donors (people who want to donate a kidney to someone they don’t know) may also be part of this program.

Donors who aren’t a match for the person who was going to receive their kidney can be part of a paired exchange program with Canadian Blood Services.
